A Few Words
Ruby's Story
A proven leader, working for you in New Westminster
Ruby Campbell is a leader in New Westminster with an impressive record building a city for everyone. She was key to implementing some of the most important projects driving our city’s revitalization and attracting new residents and young families to New Westminster.
For almost a decade, Ruby led government and community partnerships for the City of New Westminster. Projects such as Westminster Pier Park funding, Youth Centre at Moody Park, Wait for Me Daddy, and Sapperton Park improvements are some where Ruby brought community groups and governments together, listened closely, and leveraged available funding — with impressive results that have been noticed across the region. She was also critical in advocating for the Pattullo Bridge replacement, internet Broadband expansion, renoviction protections, and planning for a healthcare district around Royal Columbian Hospital
Ruby and her husband Jason have raised their daughter in New West where they are vital contributors to the community. Ruby is a sought-after volunteer, also serving on the boards of Fraserside Community Services Society, the Arts Council of New Westminster, City Stage New West and the Neighborhood Small Grants committee.
Ruby was raised by first generation new Canadians; her mother was an HEU member who worked as a nurse’s aide for 25 years. Her father, an Operating Engineer, cleaned and maintained schools as a custodian for the Vancouver School Board. Ruby was trained and worked in child care before her work with non-profits and charities.
Ruby spent four years with the Royal Columbian Hospital Foundation where she raised funds for projects such as the new ICU. She has also worked for non-profits including the Multiple Sclerosis Society, BC Lung Association, AIDS Walk, Kla-how-eya Aboriginal Centre and Asian Heritage Month Society.
As Director of Advancement at Simon Fraser University, Ruby raises money and leads conversations in strategic areas important to academic priorities and the community — such as Indigenous Studies, the Centre for Comparative Muslim Studies, Gender, Sexuality & Women Studies and Economics.
An active New Democrat, Ruby serves on the Constituency Executive for the New Westminster NDP, the BCNDP Gender Rights Committee and is a member of BCNDP Indigenous, Black and People of Colour Committee. She also served on the Constituency Executive for Surrey-Green Timbers NDP in the 2000’s.
